Friendly rivals cap their CYO career
in championship game

The word around the 2013 Girls' CYO Basketball playoff finals was "back-to-back," as each returning champion from the 2012 playoffs won successive championships in fifth through eighth grades.

In a close eighth-grade final, St. Agnes, Concord, repeated its seventh-grade championship, by defeating Holy Rosary, Antioch, 42-38. With St. Agnes up by two points 40-38 and with 10 seconds left in the game, Fiona Dolan from St. Agnes was fouled and went to the free throw line. She sank both free throws to secure the victory for the "Irish." Dolan also led the scoring with 20 points, including two 3-point shots.

Results of the championship games were:

8th grade: St. Agnes over Holy Rosary, 42-38

7th grade: Christ the King over St. Perpetua, 40-32

6th grade: St. John Vianney over St. Bonaventure, 21-13

5th grade: St. Catherine of Siena over St. Perpetua, 34-19

4th grade: St. Perpetua over St. Monica, 30-17

The Oakland Diocese Girls' CYO Basketball playoffs were hosted for girls' CYO basketball teams in the eastern portion of the diocese. The playoffs included 40 CYO basketball teams with 400 participants. Games were played at Holy Rosary gym, Antioch; Tice Valley Community Gym, Walnut Creek; Christ the King gym, Pleasant Hill; and St. Francis Gym, Concord. Finals were played at Holy Rosary Gym. The teams represented their grade groups in fourth through eighth grades from the West Diablo and the Diablo East CYO leagues.

Girls' CYO basketball teams from parishes in the western half of the diocese play in the spring, with playoffs in May.
