Mass to celebrate anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul unit

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a Mass at 5:30 p.m. April 20 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. Archbishop Alex J. Brunett, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Oakland, will be the principal celebrant.

The Mass will be a celebration of the organization's 75 years of service throughout Alameda County and will include conference members, volunteers, staff, clients and the community. All are welcome.

A reception will follow Mass with food prepared by the SVdP Kitchen of Champions culinary training program.

"We are delighted to have the involvement of Archbishop Brunett and the diocese, and look forward to celebrating with everyone in the community," said Lu Cuevas, director of SVdP Conference Support. "Our service to our neighbors in need — in simplicity, humility, charity and justice — is needed now more than ever before."

The Cathedral of Christ the Light is at 2121 Harrison St., Oakland.

Since its founding in 1938, St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County has grown to include a Community Center in downtown Oakland, which offers a dining room, drop-in centers for men, women and children, two job training programs, Homeless and Caring Court, medical clinics, and other basic services. There are thrift stores in Oakland, Fremont and Livermore, the Redux Studios and Gallery in Alameda and an electronics waste recycling. The Vincentian volunteers provide services to those in need through 40 parishes in Alameda County.

The electronics waste recycling effort will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at the Oakland store and warehouse, 9235 San Leandro St.

WasteNot, a SVdP social enterprise, will be accepting electronic waste for free. Acceptable donations include working and non-working computers, monitors, TVs, laptops, computer towers, cables, printers, fax machines, scanners, DVD players, telephones and VCRs. The company Green Work IT will provide a "hard drive destruction" service for $3.

Proceeds from warehouse purchases directly fund SVdP programs, while reducing landfill waste. Donors can receive a tax-deductible receipt.
