Day of service supports schools

Eight elementary schools in the Diocese of Oakland will benefit from Saint Mary's College's Great Bay Area Service Day for Schools on March 16. As part of its 150th anniversary "Year of the Gael" celebration, the college is inviting Bay Area residents, Gaels and non-Gaels alike, to roll up their sleeves for a morning of work at Bay Area schools.

Among the 22 schools that will get a lift from the volunteers' efforts are Our Lady of the Rosary, Union City; Queen of All Saints, Concord; St. Cornelius and St. David, Richmond; St. Elizabeth Elementary, St. Lawrence O'Toole and St. Martin de Porres, Oakland; and St. Paul, San Pablo.

Volunteers will build and maintain school gardens, paint, organize classroom materials for teachers and other general cleaning and sprucing projects.

Registration is available at www.yearofthegael.com/dayofservice.html. Participants in the program, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., will receive a T-shirt and lunch.
