Saint Mary's opens three exhibitions
Three exhibits will open Oct. 6, as Saint Mary's College of California celebrates its sesquicentennial.
The Art of the Cross
Christ's death and resurrection is the central tenet of the Christian faith and a reoccurring subject throughout 2,000 years of art history. "The Art of the Cross" presents works by Marc Chagall and others on loan from Christians in the Visual Arts (civa.org), and rarely seen works from the Saint Mary's College collection by Salvador Dali and others.
Nyame Brown: John Henry's Adventures in a Post-Black World
Inspired by bedtime stories told by the artist's father, Nyame Brown weaves the traditional but tragic African-American folklore hero, John Henry, into a series of fantastic paintings. A railroad spike driver, Henry beat a new steel-driving machine then collapsed with his hammer still in his hand. Brown is a member of the art faculty at Saint Mary's College.
Missions of Will Sparks
The mission paintings of Will Sparks (1862-1937) are known for their rich color, air of mystery and subtle reverie. This rare complete series of the 37 Alta and Baja California missions once belonged to Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. The series is on loan from Trotter Galleries, Carmel and Monterey.
"The Art of the Cross" exhibition will close Dec. 16, while the Nyame Brown and Will Sparks exhibitions will close Dec. 9.
On the opening day of the exhibitions, Oct. 6, Brown will speak about the John Henry series in the studio gallery at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., Darwin Marable will present a slide lecture, "2000 Years of the Cross in Art," in the Brother Kyran Room /Art 105. The program will be repeated at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Adult admission is $5; free admission is offered to Saint Mary's students, faculty, staff and museum members and youth through 12th grade.
