Vatican II
October is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Christ the King Parish, 199 Brandon Road, Pleasant Hill, will host two evenings on the history, study, direction and impact of the Second Vatican council at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and 18. Rev. Brian Joyce, who over the last 50 years, has served as diocesan director of Adult Education, chancellor, member of U.S. Bishop's Committee on Priestly Life and Ministry, co-author of several of its documents, and pastor in Moraga and Pleasant Hill will be the speaker for these two evenings. There is no cost. A "Church Reborn" commemorative newspaper issue will be available and free of charge for the first 300 participants.

The series kicks off with the first four one-hour films featuring Kieslowski's The Decalogue, 10 hour-long films produced by Polish television, each loosely based on one of the Ten Commandments. Whether the death of a loved one was sudden and tragic, or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us in a state of shock, confusion and sadness.
