Dominating Dragons
All four winter sports teams at Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School netted North Coast Section titles a first in school history. The women's and men's soccer teams won NCS Division II titles (Feb. 25). Then the girls basketball team, above, earned its first California Interscholastic Federation state title by defeating Laguna Hills High School 62-24 in the Division III title game on March 24. And the boys basketball team's, below, string of consecutive Division III California Interscholastic Federation NorCal titles ended at two following a 57-61 loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco on March 18 in Sacramento. The game marked the final as head coach for Doug Vierra, who will continue to teach at the school. O'Dowd alum Lou Richie (Class of '89) has been named head coach.

Father Christopher Crotty, a missionary priest with the Fathers of Mercy, led a week-long mission last month at St. Michael Parish in Livermore. The mission also included talks on healing, talks on spiritual warfare and a healing Mass. The priest, who was born in San Francisco, is the founder of The Fathers of Mercy Healing Ministry.

Did you miss last year's festivities celebrating the 100th birthday at St. Leo Parish in Oakland? Are you looking for the name of … you know, that priest back when your family lived in the parish? Wonder no more. A book that celebrates 100 years parish history at St. Leo is still on sale in the parish office during regular business hours.

— that's when the St. Joseph Garden Club of Alameda will host its 18th annual "Gardens Galore" Garden Tour. The event, which begins at 11 a.m., is a fundraiser for the two schools at St. Joseph Basilica Parish in Alameda: St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph Notre Dame High School. This self-guided tour consists of six Alameda gardens. Reservations are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the tour. The event also includes a boutique (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) featuring hand-crafted products created by Bay Area vendors. The fundraiser also includes a wine tasting, which is limited to 100 people) on May 18. The cost of the wine tasting is $50 per person and includes the Sunday tour. Now's the time to plan activities for the summer break. St. Philip Neri School in Alameda will offer academic and enrichment classes from June 12-29. For more information, 510-521-0787.

The women's basketball team at Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School won the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state title on Aug. 24 defeating the team from Laguna Hills 62-24 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento. The win is the school program's first state championship.

Speaking of the Alameda campus, coaches of the Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL) recognized 18 SJND students whom they chose for all-league honors for winter sports. For Men's Soccer: Antonio Ramirez-Allan '13; Second Team, Angel Hernandez '12; Honorable Mention, Erick Rodriguez '14, Sam Levy-Wendt '13, Nikko Degrano '12. Women's Soccer: First Team, Elizabeth Avalos '12; Second Team, Kimberly Avalos '13; Honorable Mention, Renee Barbour '13, Catherine Hanover '14, Ciara Lane '14. Men's Basketball: First Team, Temidayo Yussuf '14; Second Team, Gemeny Givens '12; Honorable Mention, Nick Lacy '12, Justin Brown '13. Women's Basketball: Second Team, Desiree Harris '13; Honorable Mention, Jessica De Mesa '12, Samantha Maritzen '12. Also Ramirez-Allan was named soccer MVP.

Among the Religious

Father Aaron Bandanadam has been appointed associate pastor at St. Philip Neri-St. Albert Parish in Alameda.

Members at Antioch's St. Ignatius Parish are going to hold a party April 28 to celebrate the 65th birthday of their pastor, Father Robert Rien. The festivities will be held in the parish's event center.
