Sister Mary Eileen (Kathleen) Morrisroe, an Oakland native who spent 25 years as a missionary in Asia, died Feb. 6 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was 85 and had recently celebrated her 60th anniversary of her profession of vows.

She was the fourth out of five children born to Anthony and Nellie Morrisroe, members at Oakland's St. Elizabeth Parish.

Sister Morrisroe graduated from St. Elizabeth Elementary and High Schools and the Providence School of Nursing before she joined the Convent of the Sisters of Good Shepherd in Los Angeles.

She spent 25 years doing missionary work, helping mothers and their young children in need in the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore. She also had assignments in New Orleans, St. Louis, Hawaii, San Francisco, Memphis and Baltimore.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Franciscan Father Paschal Morrisroe and Franciscan Father Ronan Morrisroe. Survivors include her sister, Margaret Doherty who lives in San Leandro, and her brother Michael Morrisroe and his wife, MaryAnn, who live in Hayward.

The funeral Mass took place on Feb. 10 in Baltimore. A Mass of Remembrance was held Feb. 22 at the Church of the Assumption in San Leandro.
