Marty Mart scholarship
Francesca Caruso, an eighth-grade student and athlete
from Assumption School in San Leandro, is the recipient of the CYO Marty
Mart Scholarship for Girl’s CYO Volleyball in 2012.
Francesca has participated in the CYO sports of volleyball, basketball, track, softball and cheerleading. She is a member of student leadership at the school as Commissioner of Religious Affairs and is a volunteer tutor.
In her scholarship essay, Francesca wrote: “All of the coaches that I have had throughout my years at Assumption have had good moral values. Not only did my coaches teach me to be an athlete, but they also taught me how to thrive as a faith-filled person. . . . When I look around at my competitors, teammates, and our loyal fans, I see what CYO is really about. It is not all about winning, it is about having a great time, learning and having faith in God, as well as in your teammates.”
The volleyball scholarship was awarded earlier this month at a special Mass at the Jim Negri CYO Volleyball tournament.
The CYO Office has awarded the Marty Mart Scholarship twice annually since 2003 to two outstanding CYO participants each year. The award is not given on the basis of athletic talent, but on the candidates’ expression of Christian values experienced in sports and their ability to work with teammates and with other teams in exhibiting those Christian values. Candidates submit an application asking for their reflections on their “athletic abilities, sportsmanship, and the effects of their CYO participation on the daily life and their faith.”
They are also asked to provide a reference from an adult who is significant in their lives.
The scholarship is named in honor of the late Marty Mart, former CYO assistant director, who passed away in 2002. Another scholarship will be awarded to a CYO athlete this spring.
