In its second year, the Oakland Diocesan Crèche Festival, sponsored by the Cathedral of Christ the Light, drew a record 28 entries from parishes — up from last year’s 17 — over its three-day run Dec. 9-11. Above, altar servers from St. Joachim parish in Hayward consider the crèche made by St. Callistus Parish in El Sobrante. “The diversity and artistic expression in this year’s Crèche Festival was so evident,” said Leo Keegan, director of Docent and Ministerial Services at the cathedral. “The crèches made by students from our Catholic Schools were so inspiring to very talented adult artists at St. Callistus, who created almost life-sized figures carved out of Styrofoam.”
