1962. The country’s first Catholic president was in the
White House, in October Pope John XXIII would inaugurate the
Second Vatican Council, and in California, the Archdiocese of
San Francisco, booming with post-World War II population growth,
was split up. Oakland’s first bishop, Floyd L. Begin (below),
arrived by helicopter in April.
In January, Alameda and Contra Costa counties became the new
Diocese of Oakland. The Catholic Voice will honor this 50th
anniversary year with regular reflections and reporting, including
special commemorative issues in May and August.
