2012: year of important events

The new year is one with many important milestones. Not only is the Diocese of Oakland celebrating its 50th anniversary, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council.

Four parishes in the Oakland diocese also have special birthdays. Celebrating its 50th anniversary is Our Lady Queen of the World Parish in Antioch. Celebrating 100 years will be St. Mark Parish in Richmond, St. Rose of Lima Parish in Crockett and St. Bernard Parish in Oakland.

A number of events are planned for the diocesan 50th. Since the diocese was established early in the year — Jan. 13, 1962 — each parish has been asked to note the Golden Jubilee on Epiphany Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012. The 2012 Golden Jubilee Holy Cards — with the logo and theme for the anniversary, “Gather good together in Christ” — will be delivered by the end of December. A rite of blessing to accompany the Eucharist will be provided as an option for parishes, in English, Vietnamese and Spanish.

On Aug. 22, 2012, the memorial for the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a diocesan-wide celebration will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone will be principal celebrant and Bishop Emeritus John Cummins and Archbishop Allen Vigneron will be principal concelebrants. Tickets will be allocated to each parish for this event.

Other celebratory events, including a historical symposium and gala dinner, are being planned.
