Men’s conference draws 200

At the fifth annual East Bay Catholic Men’s Conference, attendees were asked to do something they have not been asked to do before.

Evangelist Jesse Romero, a former Los Angeles County deputy and kickboxing champion, asked the men under the age of 30 to do 10 pushups.

They did, according to Ed Hopfner, diocesan coordinator of family life who directed the conference, which was held Nov. 5 at St. Isidore Parish in Danville.

Other speakers included Father Gary Sumpter, a pastor in the Diocese of Santa Rosa, who stressed the importance of prayer in one’s life, Hopfner said.

Tim Staples, director of apologetics and evangelization at Catholic Answers, spoke twice during the event. His talk stressed the importance of evangelization.

To speaker Fred Picciano, past president of the Catholic Men’s Fellowship, fell the task of helping the participants to think of a practical plan of action to take once they left the conference.

Attendance at this year’s conference was the best ever, Hopfner said. More than half of the attendees, he said, were members of the Knights of Columbus.
