“Smart Classrooms,” reads the sign in front of St. Joseph Notre Dame High School. “Very smart.”

And new. Very new.

With the renovation of the 1930s-era Marianist Hall completed and opened to students this term, the Alameda school has remodeled and renovated every building on its campus.

In the $2 million project, nine classrooms, as well as the building’s hallways, were remodeled to bring modern wireless technology into the classrooms, as well as allow for collaborative learning, said Mary McInerney, director of communication for the school.

In summer 2010, St. Joseph Notre Dame renovated 10 classrooms and Notre Dame Hall during the first phase of the Smart Classrooms project. A previous phase four years ago brought college-level laboratories and equipment to the Anthony V. Aiello Science Center.

In making the campus more technologically advanced, the past has not been left behind. In Marianist Hall, which in days gone by had been the boys’ high school, oversize class portraits hang on the walls of the halls, which retain their graceful arches.
