Blessing of animals
Oct. 4 is the feast day of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals (depicted in a stained-glass window at St. Hyacinth Church in Glen Head, N.Y.). Mercy Retirement & Care Center, 3431 Foothill Blvd., Oakland, invites owners and pets to join in the traditional Blessing of Animals in its courtyard, beginning with a pet procession at 2:30 p.m. Oct 4, and the blessing by Father William Brand, OFM, beginning at 3 p.m. Pictures of pets may be brought for a blessing if pets do not like crowds. Fatima Rosary Event
