How to help with Japan relief effort
As the magnitude of the disaster in Japan unfolds, religious
and humanitarian aid organizations are stepping up efforts
to provide assistance. The March 11 earthquake was followed
by tsunamis that wiped out entire cities and by fears of
catastrophe at damaged nuclear power stations.
Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone has authorized parishes in
the Diocese of Oakland to take up a second collection for
the Japanese relief effort.
Each pastor may decide whether, and when, to schedule the
collection. The money will go to Catholic Relief Services,
which is working with Caritas International and others to
find pathways to bring aid to the many thousands stricken
by the earthquake and tsunami.
Individuals may also make direct donations to Catholic Relief
Services through its website, www.crs.org,
phone (800) 736-3467 or mail, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD
21203.
Saying he, too, was horrified by the images of the death
and destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami in
Japan, Pope Benedict XVI asked people to join him in praying
for the victims. |
