Vietnamese
martyrs honored
About 1,200 people participated in the Oakland
Diocese’s Vietnamese community celebration, procession and Mass
for their martyred ancestors at St. Felicitas Church in San Leandro
on Nov. 28. The 117 martyrs were slain during the persecution of Catholics
in Vietnam between 1798 and 1861. The martyrs, canonized by Pope John
Paul II in 1988, were among more than 100,000 Vietnamese Catholics
killed because of their religious beliefs.
