Sister Catherine (of the Sacred Heart) Arnoldy, a longtime
educator who taught at two Alameda schools, died in Los Gatos on Jan.
16, just one month after celebrating her 100th birthday. She had been
a member of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for 82 years.
Born in Tipton, Kansas, her family moved to California where she graduated
from Notre Dame High School in Marysville. She joined the Sisters of Notre
Dame in Belmont, attended Holy Names College in Oakland, San Jose College,
Lone Mountain College and received her master’s degree in education
and administration from the University of San Francisco.
She was a teacher and administrator in Notre Dame elementary and secondary
schools in California and Oregon. She taught eighth grade at St. Joseph
School in Alameda during the late 1930s until 1944. She was assistant
principal at Notre Dame High School in Alameda from 1968 – 1969.
At age 67 she began a 20-year career as a volunteer at Notre Dame High
School in Belmont. She spent the last decade of her life at Holy Names
Convent in Los Gatos.
Two Masses celebrating her life and ministry were held, one at the Sisters
of Notre Dame Province Center Chapel in Belmont on Jan. 22, with Father
Stephen Howell presiding, and the other at Holy Names Convent in Los Gatos
on Jan. 21, with Father Kevin Joyce presiding. Burial was at Holy Cross
Cemetery in Colma.
