A Friendly celebration
Friends and supporters of A Friendly Place, a
day center for homeless women in downtown Oakland, will gather next month
to celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary. The center, founded
by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, offers guests a place to do
laundry, get a hot shower, and a safe respite during the day. The center
also has a transitional housing facility, A Friendly Manor.

More than 850 people gathered at Christ the King
Church in Pleasant Hill on Jan. 7 for a healing Mass for and with
Father Declan Deane, parochial vicar, who is fighting cancer. In addition
to CTK parishioners, Catholics from other parishes where Father Deane
has served were in attendance.
The Women’s Guild at St. Raymond Parish in Dublin will be
giving valentines to the resident veterans at Livermore VA Hospital as
part of their “Valentines for Vets” campaign.
St. Isidore Parish will host its annual candlelight Rosary commemorating
the 37th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 in the church,
445 La Gonda Way in Danville. The Rosary and Benediction will be followed
by a dessert buffet. Children are welcome and babysitting will be available.

Brandon E. Macadaeg, a member of St. Joan of Arc Parish in San
Ramon who is studying for the priesthood at the Pontifical North American
College in Rome, was instituted into the ministry of lector Jan. 17. Fifty
other seminarians also became lectors, one of the ministries they receive
as they proceed towards diaconal and priestly ordination.

Happy Birthday to Louise DeRoche, a longtime
member at St. Edward Parish in Newark, who will celebrate her 90th
birthday on Jan. 29.
Congratulations to Robert and Berenice Gray who are celebrating
60 years of marriage on Jan. 28. They were married at St. Mary Magdalene
in Berkeley, spent 40 years at St. Ambrose Parish in Berkeley
and are now parishioners at St. Anne Parish in Walnut Creek. They
have seven children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
