Sister Ann Maureen King, SND

Sister Ann Maureen King, an educator who continued to serve long after her “retirement,” died on Nov. 13 in Oakland. She was 97 and had been a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur for 80 years

Born in Vallejo, she grew up in Alameda and graduated from Notre Dame Academy. Following in the footsteps of her sister, Mary Wilma, she joined the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1929. She spent nearly 50 years as an educator at Notre Dame schools in Redwood City, San Francisco, Belmont, San Carlos, Marysville, Honolulu, Salinas and San Jose. In the Oakland Diocese she was a principal and teacher at St. Joseph’s in Alameda from 1961 – 1963.

She also served as pastoral minister at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Redwood City and as librarian at College of Notre Dame in Belmont. She helped to computerize the college library and assisted with the Sisters’ archives. Until recently she helped as a receptionist at Notre Dame Province Center before retiring to Oakland’s Mercy Retirement and Care Center.

The funeral Mass was held Nov. 23 at the Sisters Province Center in Belmont. Burial was at Santa Clara Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1520 Ralston Avenue, Belmont, CA 94002 or online at www.snddenca.org.

Sister M. Jean Clare Little, CSC


Sister M. Jean Clare Little, a longtime educator who worked briefly as a teacher in the Oakland Diocese, died Nov. 15 in Indiana. A member of the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1948, she was 81.

A native of Salt Lake City, she taught in elementary schools for some 20 years, including Oakland’s St. Bernard School from 1954 – 1956. After becoming aware of the challenges facing students with learning disabilities, she returned to college and earned two master’s degrees (Gonzaga University and the University of Nevada in Las Vegas) to address those concerns. She developed a special program that eventually evolved into a state-recognized alternative school in Las Vegas. She also designed programs for learning-disabilities students at other schools where she was assigned.

She retired to Saint Mary’s Convent in Notre Dame, IN, in 2001 and remained active in the ministry of prayer until her death.

The funeral Mass was held Nov. 18 at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, IN.

Sister Angela Molahan, OP


Sister M. Angela (Eileen) Molahan, a former teacher at the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley, died Dec. 2 in Fremont. She was 93 and had been a Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose for almost 70 years.

Born in Mohill, Co., Leitrim, Ireland, she and her family immigrated to the United States in 1931 and she grew up in Oregon. She taught at the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley from 1955 – 58. She also taught at schools in San Francisco and Los Altos and spent 35 years teaching at parish schools in Portland, Oregon. Since 1993 she has lived at the Motherhouse in Fremont where she was involved in community service and the ministry of prayer.

The funeral Mass was held Dec. 7 at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters in Fremont. Burial took place the following day at the Motherhouse. Memorial gifts may be made to the Dominican Sisters, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.

Sister Eleanor Stech, OP


Sister Eleanor Stech, a former teacher at Oakland’s Bishop O’Dowd High School, died Dec. 6 in Adrian, Mich. She was 83 and in the 59th year of her religious profession as an Adrian Dominican.

Formerly known as Sister Paul Ellen Stech, the Chicago native was an educator for 21 years at schools in Michigan, Illinois, and California. She taught at Bishop O’Dowd from 1957 – 63. She also served as a pastoral minister in Chicago and in various positions in her community. She was co-founder of Centro Catalina, a center for economically poor women and children in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico, where she served for eight years. She moved to the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2004.

Survivors include her brother, Robert Stech of Rockford, Mich., and a sister, Rosemary Zambon of San Jacinto, Calif.

The funeral Mass was held in St. Catherine Chapel at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. Burial was in the Congregation cemetery there.
