Awaiting Christmas
Advent, a season of joyful expectation before Christmas, begins this year on Nov. 29. The Advent wreath, a tradition traced to 16th century Germany, is made of four candles in a circle of evergreens. In the U.S., three candles are usually purple and one is rose. In Germany, however, the candles are often red. One candle is lit each week of the Advent season.
