Father Norkett to receive honor
from St. Mary’s Center

Father Michael Norkett

St. Mary’s Center in Oakland will honor Father Michael Norkett, pastor of St. Paschal Parish in Oakland, Oct. 17, for his two decades of support for the center’s work with homeless and isolated seniors, children and families. Also to be honored at the dinner dance and art show at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral will be the center’s Senior Advocates for Hope and Justice.

Father Norkett began his affiliation with the center when he was pastor at St. Mary’s Church, the center’s first home in downtown Oakland. In 1992 he arranged for the center to move to improved facilities in the parish hall of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, which had been closed since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

When the center needed to move in 2006 because of the sale of the cathedral site, Father Norkett again stepped in, this time encouraging prospective donors to support the center’s efforts to acquire a new site.

The Senior Advocates will share the spotlight with Father Norkett. Formerly homeless seniors, they work to ensure that impoverished seniors have their basic needs of food, housing and healthcare met with dignity.

Cost for the Oct. 17 event is $75. All proceeds will support the center’s work. Call Amy Vaughan at 510-923-9600 for reservations.
