OBITUARY
Sister Martha Bendorf, SNJM

Sister Martha Bendorf, a longtime educator who worked at schools in northern and southern California, died in Los Gatos on June 18 at the age of 86. She had been a vowed member of the Holy Names Sisters of Jesus and Mary for 48 years.

Born Ann Marie Bendorf in Flagstaff, Arizona, Sister Bendorf began her ministry in education as a high school teacher. She taught at Oakland’s Holy Names High School from 1961-62 as well as high schools in Anaheim and Pasadena. She later worked as an early childhood educator at St. Mary Preschool in Oakland from 1986-89 and at schools in Los Gatos. She also helped start a library for neighborhood children in San Jose.

Sister Bendorf spent 10 years as a core member of the House of Prayer at Emmanuel House in Los Gatos.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Jim Callahan; brother, Tom Bendorf; and 20 nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass was held June 24 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos. Burial took place the following day at Holy Sepulchre, Hayward.
