Young authors honored for works
of fiction, autobiography and poetry

Aspiring writers in 25 elementary schools throughout the Oakland Diocese recently showcased their work at the annual Young Authors Faire, hosted this year by St. Mary School in Walnut Creek.

Local author-illustrator Teri Sloat spoke about her books for children, encouraging the students to find creative ways to tell their stories.

The students submitted fiction stories, autobiographies, and poetry as well as class and individual children’s books. Seven grand prizes were awarded:

Kindergarten Class, Christ the King School in Pleasant Hill, for “Down by the Bay.”
First-Grade Class, Holy Rosary School in Antioch, for “The Can and Cannots of Grandparents.”

Second-Grade Class, Corpus Christi School in Piedmont, for “Spring Haikus.”
Beatrice Levy, third grader at St. Joseph School in Alameda, for “The Lawn Made Me A Poet, But Now I Have to Move It.”

Fifth-Grade Class, St. Philip Neri School in Alameda, for “Priceless Postcards to Heaven.”

Drew Retallick, sixth-grader at Assumption School in San Leandro, for “The Real Godfather.”

Colleen Anders, seventh-grader at St. Philip Neri School in Alameda, for “Donny the Dinosaur.”

An additional 142 awards were given to students from pre-Kindergarten through grade 8.
