St. Bede School honored for environmental programs

The City of Hayward has awarded St. Bede School a 2009 School Environmental Achievement Award for its campus programs to raise environmental awareness. The school was one of several to receive the award April 28.

Members of the school’s Ecology Club, which promotes cleanliness and environmental stewardship, lead a recycling program that includes collecting recyclables from each classroom every Friday. The materials are separated into appropriate bins by the students as well as parents and school staff.

The students also plant flowers and vegetables and maintain the school’s butterfly garden.

The school’s faculty was cited for its creative use of recycled materials in student art and craft projects. Several students developed global warming-themed experiments for the annual science fair.
