Anointing of the sick to be offered at Oakland cathedral on Feb. 7

The Order of Malta in the Oakland Diocese will host a World Day of the Sick Mass on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of Christ the Light.

All of those suffering from a serious acute or chronic illness, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, chemical dependency, or emotional/mental problems, and their caregivers are invited to participate. During the Mass, which honors Our Lady of Lourdes, the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered.
Bishop Allen Vigneron was to be the principal celebrant, but because he assumes his new responsibilities as archbishop of Detroit on Jan. 28, another celebrant will preside at the liturgy, or-- ganizers said.

Peter Bewley, one of the organizers, recommends that those wishing to receive the sacrament arrive at the cathedral by 9:30 a.m. so they can be seated in a special area set aside for that purpose. Wheel chairs can be accommodated.

Parking, including handicapped spaces, will be available free of charge in the cathedral’s underground garage on 21st Street for the first 200 cars arriving. Attendants will be available to help individuals to reach the elevators and the designated seating areas.

Additional parking is available in parking lots nearby (fees vary) and the 19th Street BART station is approximately three blocks from the cathedral.

Following the ceremony, there will be an opportunity to tour the Order of Malta’s new free health clinic for the uninsured operating in the cathedral complex.

Pope John Paul II created World Day of the Sick in February 1993.
