New priests for Oakland Diocese

AT LEFT: Rolando Bartolay (left), Juan Franco (center) and Kenneth Nobrega present themselves for ordination, May 16, at All Saints Church in Hayward.

ABOVE: After making their pledge of obedience, the three men prostrate themselves while the Litany of the Saints is sung. This prayer asks the saints to intercede that God will bless those to be ordained.

BELOW: Father Juan Franco recites part of the Eucharistic Prayer, his first act as a priest. He and the other newly ordained concelebrated the Mass with Bishop Allen Vigneron and Bishop John Cummins.

All phoTos by Greg Tarczynski
LEFT: Bishop Vigneron ordains Juan Franco, conferring the grace of ministerial priesthood through prayers and the laying on of hands. ABOVE LEFT: Bishop Vigneron presents the chalice to Rolando Bartolay. ABOVE RIGHT: After anointing the hands of Kenneth Nobrega with chrism, Bishop Vigneron wraps them with white linen strips. The anointing signifies the priest’s distinctive participation in the priesthood of Christ by the sacrifice he will offer with his hands.

LEFT: The newly ordained men receive the blessings of their fellow priests. This communal laying on of hands symbolizes that the newly ordained will be entering into the presbyteral college of the local Church. ABOVE: Choir members and musicians add a festive tone to the ordination liturgy, which was attended by the families and friends of the three men.
