Community outreach
Members of Brownie Troop #30943 at St. Edward School in Newark are all smiles as they hold up flower pots they painted and delivered to the retired Sisters at the motherhouse of the Mission San Jose Dominicans in Fremont. As a second community service project, the troop collected 12 boxes of toiletry items, which they donated to Second Chance, an emergency shelter in Newark, as part of a substance abuse treatment program.

Honoring Dr. Greene

Alexandra Greene, a local Catholic, was just weeks away from picking up her M.D. degree from UC Davis when she was killed in a private plane crash in Tuscon, Arizona, on April 15, 2007. The university granted her degree posthumously.

To honor her memory, her friends have organized a concert to benefit Doctors With-out Borders, an organization she admired. The concert, June 22 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, will feature pianist Elizabeth Morgan and harpist Carla Gee. Tax-deductible donations will be accepted at the door.

Greene had worked as an emergency medical technician and as a wilderness first-responder and volunteer. She had also volunteered at clinics for low-income families in the Sacramento area and on medical trips to Guatemala.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Daniel Micsunescu, and her parents. Her mother is a member of St. Ambrose Parish in Berkeley.

Around the Parishes
