Student body presidents from all nine Catholic high schools in the Oakland Diocese came together Jan. 29 for a day of service at nonprofit organizations in the East Bay. The outreach was one of several annual activities of the diocesan Inter-School Council. Made up of the schools’ leaders, the Council also sponsors an inter-school Winter Ball and an installation of student officers.

This year’s service retreat included nine additional students from each school. Each student was assigned to a work team with a student representative from each of the other schools. They gathered for prayer at Holy Redeemer Center in Oakland, then drove to various nonprofit groups to help with tasks from gardening to visiting the elderly. The event concluded with the students reconvening at Holy Redeemer Center for a 90-minute discussion on their service experience.

The organizations benefiting from their work were: Alameda Point Collaborative, Catholic Worker in Oakland, Chaparral House in Berkeley, Davis Street Center in San Leandro, Golden Age Retirement Home in Alameda, and Mercy Retirement and Care Center, REACH, St. Martin de Porres School and St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, all in Oakland.
