Two new priests for the Oakland Diocese

The newly ordained priests, Father Carl Arcosa (left) and Father Paul Chen, concelebrate Mass with Bishop Allen Vigneron.

Carl Tacuyan Arcosa, a native of the Philippines, and Paul Feng Chen, a native of China, were ordained priests for the Oakland Diocese May 18 at All Saints Church in Hayward.

Father Arcosa, 30, studied for the priesthood in Manila before transferring to St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park in 2005. His pastoral training included service at St. Ignatius Parish in Antioch and St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Livermore.

Father Chen, 53, was not able to study to become a priest in China because of religious persecution. He left his country in 1991, joined the Order of the Servant of Mary in 1993 and transferred to the Oakland Diocese after leaving the order in 2000. He recently completed his theological studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary.

Bishop Allen Vigneron lays his hands on Paul Chen before offering the prayer of consecration, ordaining him as a priest. Bishop Vigneron ordains Carl Arcosa, through prayers and the laying on of hands.
Paul Chen pledges obedience to Bishop Vigneron and his successor in the Oakland Diocese. Father Larry D’Anjou, diocesan vocations director, witnessed the pledge while holding Bishop Vigneron’s crosier. Bishop Vigneron anoints the hands of Carl Arcosa.
A priest embraces Paul Chen after helping him put on his priestly vestments. Bishop Vigneron hands the chalice to Carl Arcosa.

Carl Arcosa and Paul Chen prostrate themselves before Bishop Vigneron at the beginning of the ordination ceremony.
