Deacons renew service vows
Deacon Burt Rigley holds his wife June’s hand as he and approximately 200 other deacons in the diocese renew their ordination vows during Mass with Bishop Allen H. Vigneron Feb.11 in Pleasanton. The Mass concluded a three-day convocation/retreat for the deacons. Rigley serves at Transfiguration Parish in Castro Valley.

Deacon Cross honorees
Carol Johnson, left, and Faye Butler are this year’s recipients of the Deacon Cross, given by diocesan deacons to lay persons who have exhibited exemplary service. Johnson serves as executive director of St. Mary’s Center, which operates a full-service program for homeless seniors and a child care facility near downtown Oakland. Butler, a longtime social activist, is founder of a Pax Christi group at St. Joseph Parish in Fremont, an advocate for abolition of the deathpenalty and nuclear weapons, and organizer of a community Prayer for Peace.

Day Home honors its own

St. Vincent’s Day Home, the oldest and largest child development center in Alameda County, will honor three of its board members at its 16th annual Children’s Choice Awards gala, Feb. 23, in Oakland. Rene Boisvert, an entrepreneur, Matt Haley, an attorney, and Erin McGlynn, a public relations consultant, have all given of their time and energy to serve the Day Home and its children, particularly in fund raising.

Special recognition will also be given to Michael Staggs, owner of Scott’s Seafood Restaurant at Jack London Square, for his ongoing generosity, and to Eric Beegun, a UC Berkeley football player, for coordinating a successful auction for SVDH at Cal Football’s Kickoff in 2006. Sara Sidney of KTVU Channel 2 News will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the evening. For more information, contact SVDH at (510) 832-8324 or www.svdh.org.
