Sister Mary
Faith Clarke, a former teacher at Oakland’s Holy Names High School
who also served as a treasurer at Holy Names College (now University)
in Oakland, died Dec. 26 in Los Angeles following a severe stroke suffered
three weeks earlier. A Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for
58 years, Sister Clarke died two days before her 78th birthday.
Born Elizabeth Anne Clarke, she grew up in the Santa Monica area. She
made her vows as a Holy Names Sister in August 1950. She taught business
classes at Oakland’s Holy Names High School. She also taught at
elementary and high schools in Altadena, Kentfield, and Playa del Rey
before moving into administration.
She served as the provincial superior for the California Province of the
Holy Names Sisters from 1976-81, and was general administration counselor
for the Sisters. While serving in these positions she was a member of
the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR).
Over the past 20 years she worked as a community development consultant,
was the second vicar for women religious of the Los Angeles Archdiocese,
served on the committee that designed the Cathedral of Our Lady of the
Angels, and was a pastoral associate at a Los Angeles parish.
Survivors include her sisters, Rosemary Carr of Los Gatos and Eleanor
Clarke Yukic of Berkeley, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass took place Jan. 7 at the Holy Names Chapel in Los Gatos.
Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony will preside at a memorial Mass on Jan.
13 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Memorial gifts in Sister
