Rock your soul
Father Stan Fortuna, a priest-musician known for his music as well as his powerful preaching, will headline a June 24 concert at the James Logan High School Pavilion, 1800 H St., in Union City, beginning at 5 p.m. The concert will also feature local Bay Area youth bands and talents. Honor for Starr
The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley will present Kevin Starr, California State Librarian Emeritus, the Archbishop Alemany Award for Christian Service on June 22 at St. Albert Priory, 5890 Birch Court, Oakland. The historian, author, and teacher has served on the advisory board of St. Mary’s College in Moraga, as a regent at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, and on the Catholic Commission on Intellectual Life. Prayer Service Honoring Cancer Survivors. 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St., Alameda. Non-denominational prayer service in honor and prayer for those who have battled cancer. Held in conjunction with St. Joseph’s participation in the Alameda Relay for Life, a 24-hour event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. Cathy Hicks, Walnut Creek mayor, plans to attend and issue a proclamation honoring the parish; June 27: 7:30 p.m. concert featuring Keenan Boswell who first performed at St. Stephen at age 10 and who begins studies at Juilliard this fall; July 1: 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., parish picnic on the parish grounds. Food and drink prices will be from the 1960s when the parish was founded. “It’s About Time,” a jazz band featuring parishioner Joe DeHope, will perform. 7 p.m.: A dance with the celebration’s theme, “The Little Parish That Could,” will wind up the festivities.
