Foundation poured for new cathedral

Above, members of the crew building the diocese’s new Cathedral of Christ the Light throw medals of St. Christopher, St. Joseph the Worker and Our Lady Queen of the World into the first concrete pour, Dec. 9. The ceremony is common for construction crews who invoke the saints for worker safety. St. Joseph is the patron saint of workers, and Our Lady Queen of the World is patroness of the Oakland Diocese. Three thousand tons of concrete were poured that day. The construction is expected to be completed by January 2008.

In preparation for the concrete pour, construction workers lower a beam that will help form the foundation of the new cathedral.

A worker holds one of the St. Christopher medals blessed by Bishop Allen Vigneron before it was thrown into the concrete.
