Justice seeker
Sister Helen Prejean, author of the best-selling book “Dead Man Walking,” will participate at the annual Sophia Summer Institute July 7 – 10 at Holy Names University, 3500 Mountain Blvd. in Oakland. Sister Prejean will present a program based on her recent book, “Death of Innocents.” Others scheduled to appear at the Institute, entitled “Envision an Engaged Cosmology,” are Father Jim Conlon, professor and director of the Sophia Center, and Brian Swimme, who teaches in the Sophia program. Tuesdays, June 21, 28
Eucharistic Adoration. 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. in Mary’s Chapel at St. Jarlath Church, 2620 Pleasant St., Oakland. Come and spend an hour with Jesus.
One Spirit Prayer Group. 1 – 2:30 p.m. at Santa Maria Church, 20 Santa Maria Way, Orinda. All are welcome “to join us regularly, or on a drop-in basis, as we pray each week.”

June 23 – 26
Women’s Cursillo. At St. John the Baptist Parish, 264 East Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo. A Cursillo is a short course in Christ, full of traditional activities which allow the participants to experience authentic Christian community. Information: Nita Volker, (925) 828-9442.

Annual Mass of the Sacred Heart for Members of the Catholic Ladies’ Aid Society. 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, 1500 34th Ave., Oakland. Grand Chaplain Father Paul Devine, officiating. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Triduum. 8 and 10 a.m. at St. Anne Church, 1600 Rossmoor Parkway, Walnut Creek. The triduum will consist of Mass, homily and Devotion prayers. The Devotion centers around the miraculous picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help said to have been the cause of miraculous cures and of many personal favors granted.

Living Color: Inside the Outsiders. At the Hearst Art Gallery of St. Mary’s College, 1928 St. Mary’s Road, Moraga. Gallery hours: Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. Featuring more than 100 recent works by the Outsiders, Northern California’s premier group of plein-air painters. These painters trace their artistic roots back to a group of early 20th century modernists known as the Society of Six: Selden Gile, Maurice Logan, Louis Siegriest, August Gay, Bernard von Eichman and William Clapp. Sarah Beserra will offer present a slide-talk on the history of the plein-air movement in California art on July 23; $5 general, includes reception admission; free to members.
