Sister Thoma Maynard, OP
Sister Thoma Maynard, a former teacher at Bishop O’Dowd
High School in Oakland, died May 2 in Adrian, Mich. She was 97 years of
age and in the 72nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican
Congregation.
Born Maxine Maynard in San Francisco, she graduated from Adrian High School
in Adrian, Mich., received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and
science from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Science degree
in plant physiology from the Institutum Divi Thomae in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Sister Maynard spent 29 years as a high school teacher. In addition to
her assignment at Bishop O’Dowd High School (1966 – 70), she
taught at high schools in Chicago, Detroit, Miami Shores in Florida, and
the Dominican Republic, and for one year at Barry College (University)
in Miami Shores.
During the 1970s Sister Maynard did cancer research at the University
of Wyoming in Laramie, at St. Thomas Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, and
at SDI Institute in Houston, Texas. She was a research associate for four
years at Xavier University in Cincinnati, and a volunteer at hospitals
in Santa Cruz, Calif., and Adrian, Mich.
The funeral Mass was held May 6 at St. Catherine Chapel of the Dominican
Life Center in Adrian, Mich. Burial was in the congregation cemetery.
