Joining the cancer fight
Alameda’s St. Joseph Basilica Parish along
with St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph Notre Dame
High School joined forces with the American Cancer Society to “Paint
the Town Purple” to kickoff this year’s Relay for Life
fundraising season. Local businesses and other organizations decorated
storefronts and streetscapes in purple ribbons, balloons, and streamers
to call attention to efforts to raise money for the Cancer Society’s
outreach and education programs.
Last year the St. Joseph community raised over $12,000 and hosted a prayer
service for those touched by cancer. This year’s Alameda Relay for
Life will be held June 27 and 28 at Encinal High School, and the fifth
annual Faith in a Cure prayer service will be held June 15 at 7:30 pm
in St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut Street.

the Parishes
Members at St. Ignatius Parish in Antioch will
gather June 6 to observe the parish’s 30th anniversary. The celebration
will include a Mass of Thanksgiving at 5 p.m., followed by a reception
where a variety of ethnic foods will be available in several food booths.
Charter members of the parish, both living and deceased, will be honored.
St. Albert the Great and St. Philip Neri, Alameda’s
cluster parish, is continuing its campaign of environmental stewardship.
Parishioners have collected 19,544 used household batteries — moving
another step closer to its goal of 20,000 by May 31, marking the third
anniversary of the parish campaign.
St. Peter Martyr Parish in Pittsburg observed Children’s
Day, April 25-26, by blessing the parish’s children at all the weekend
Masses.

Around
the Schools
Congratulations to 11 award-winning fifth-graders at
Our Lady of Grace School in Castro Valley whose work will be published
in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans. The poets are: Nicole
Nazareth, Elliot Farinaro, Sydney Bridgeman, Macey Ibalio, Elias Wahbeh,
Olivia Smith, Ryan Cardenas, Christopher Marquez, Lyndsey Wong, Maia Samboy
and America Morales. And speaking of award-winning writers, congratulations
also go to Jennifer Smith, a third-grader at OLG, whose essay on
Castro Valley won an award in a contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
Among other prizes, Jennifer was given an opportunity to ride in the Rowell
Ranch Rodeo Parade.
The choir at Oakland’s St. Leo School sang at the Annual
Police Memorial, which honors and remembers Oakland police officers who
were killed in the line of duty.
The seventh-grade class at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Fremont
recently raised $100 for the St. Justin Center in Tanzania, Africa.
St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley has four new Eagle Scouts
in its Class of 2009. They are Michael Conn, Daniel Woelffer, Patrick
Nolan, and Kevin Renner. All four are members of Corpus
Christi Parish in Piedmont and the Piedmont Council of Boy Scouts
of America.
St. Mary’s High track team swept both the girls and boys team
titles at the Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL) Championships. The girls
team scored 239 points and the boys raked up 191 points. Top performances
by individual athletes included Aziza Baker who won the high jump,
long jump and triple jump; Trinity Wilson who triumphed in the
100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter and 100-meter races; Alice Baker
who went long with distance victories in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter events;
and Ikem Okmudiafor who turned in a double win in the 110-meter
hurdles and the triple jump.
Congratulations to Kristian Ipsen, a sophomore at Concord’s
De La Salle High School, who dominated the North Coast Section (NCS)
diving championship on May 14 at the Concord Community Pool. On his final
dive Ipsen received perfect scores from all judges, earning a score of
699.60, over 180 points greater than his nearest competitor.
Alitta Boyd, a senior at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward,
swept all three of her events at the Hayward Area Athletic League track
meet in Castro Valley, May 16. She won the 100 and 200 meter events for
the second straight year and broke her own record in the long jump, set
last year. At that same meet Damajeria Dubose, a senior at Oakland’s
Bishop O’Dowd High School, took four titles including wins in
the 800 and 3,200 events. She was also a member of the winning 1,600 relay
team.
Troy Channing, a freshman who plays third base on the baseball team
at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, is one of 16 semifinalists
for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the top player in collegiate
baseball. Channing, who is hitting .379, set single-season records in
home runs and RBIs, at 20 and 75 respectively.

Among the Religious
Retired San Francisco Archbishop John Quinn will
preside at a memorial Mass June 8 for Sister Maria de la Cruz Aymes,
a member of the Society of Helpers and renowned catechetical pioneer,
at San Francisco’s cathedral, 1111 Gough St. Sister Aymes, who died
last month in Chicago, was supervisor of CCD for the San Francisco Archdiocese.
She also lectured extensively throughout the world and wrote catechetical
textbooks for Wm. H. Sadlier, Inc. with Jesuit Father Francis Buckley
from 1956-1981.
A Mass of Thanksgiving will celebrate the five decades of priestly ministry
of Father Walter Mayer at 11 a.m. on May 30 at St. Michael Parish
in Livermore. The retired priest, a native of Chicago Heights, Illinois,
served as an associate pastor at St. Mary Parish in Walnut Creek and St.
Felicitas Parish in San Leandro after ministering in the Diocese of Joliet,
Illinois. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1959.
Father John Maxwell, pastor at St. John the Baptist Parish in El
Cerrito, will celebrate his golden jubilee as a priest with a Mass
on June 13 at 5 p.m. He has spent most of priestly ministry in the Oakland
Diocese including nearly 30 years as pastor at the former St. Andrew-St.
Joseph Parish in Oakland, as a co-founder of Salesian High School
in Richmond, and a co-founder of the Greater Richmond Interfaith
Program.

in Livermore, on 50 years of marriage.
Robert Montgomery, a 1970 graduate of Concord’s De La Salle
High School, was named the school’s Alumnus of the Year for
his myriad contributions to the school and the local community. A longtime
resident of Walnut Creek, Montgomery has served as a member and chair
of the DLS board of trustees, as a member and president of the alumni
association, and in the local Make-A-Wish Foundation.
