New superintendent of schools named

Holy Names Sister Barbara Bray, assistant superintendent of Oakland Diocesan schools for the past 11 years, has been named the new superintendent.

Prior to her recent appointment by Bishop Allen Vigneron, Sister Bray had served as temporary superintendent for the past six months.

An educator in the East Bay since 1977, she spent one year teaching fourth grade at Sacred Heart School in Oakland, five years as principal of St. Bede’s School in Hayward, and 13 years as principal of St. Theresa’s School in Oakland.

Her duties as superintendent will include working with the staff of the Department of Catholic Schools and continuing her ongoing responsibilities around curriculum and the professional development of faculty and staff.

There are 45 elementary schools and nine high schools in the Oakland Diocese. Sister Bray is also working with a diocesan committee exploring the feasibility of building a high school in Livermore.
