OBITUARY:
Brother Joseph Jerome Gallegos, F.S.C.

Christian Brother Joseph Jerome Gallegos, a former principal at De La Salle High School in Concord, died Oct. 17 at Mont La Salle in Napa following an extended illness. He was 70 years of age and had been a Christian Brother for over 50 years.

A native of New Mexico, he entered the novitiate of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and received the habit in 1956. After receiving his bachelor’s of arts and master’s degrees from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, he began a long career in secondary education.

Early in his ministry he taught at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley and at high schools in Sacramento and Bakersfield. He was director of the Christian Brothers Retreat House in St. Helena from 1970 to 1973.

He served as a teacher and vice principal at De La Salle High School before his appointment as principal there in 1981. He held that post for 11 years. He also served as principal at high schools in Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Larry Wade; his sister, Emma Savala; 13 nieces and nephews and 12 grandnephews and grandnieces.
The funeral Mass was held Oct. 25 at St. Apollinaris Church in Napa. Burial followed in the cemetery at Mont La Salle. Memorial gifts may be made to the Lasallian Education Fund, De La Salle Institute, 4401 Redwood Road, Napa 94558.
