Oakland businessman named
interim president of St. John’s University

Dan Whalen, an Oakland businessman known for his philanthropy, has been named interim president of Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. A 1970 graduate of the university, he replaces Brother Dietrich Reinhart, who resigned last month because of ill health.

Whalen’s generosity has included gifts to a shelter for battered women in Saint Cloud, Minn., the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland, the Cathedral of Christ the Light, and a number of projects in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
