Working for a cure
St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley observed
October Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a number of projects that
resulted in more than $2,000 in online donations to the Susan G. Komen
for the Cure Foundation and $1500 in pledges at the Mills College
Swim for the Cure. Members of the campus Yarn Club sold handmade scarves
in shades of pink. With some of their creations are club members,

Hooray for the refs!
A standing ovation to a group of referees from the diocesan
Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)! Mark Leyva, director of referees
for the CYO’s Southern Alameda County, asked his referees to consider
donating what they earn from just one CYO game to a fund he set up called
“1 Game, Many Meals” to benefit programs aiding those who
are hungry.
More than half of the 40 referees said “Yes!” and since September
they have donated $768. Leyva, a member at St. Leander Parish in San Leandro
where he is the assistant athletic director, said he was especially moved
by the response because a good number of the referees are teens. At a
meeting later this month, the referees will decide what non-profit program
or service will receive the funds.

“significant funds” and “untold” volunteer hours
to the organization.

received $100; Alexis Foster, a second place winner, picked up
$50; Deija Jackson, took third place and $25; and honorable mention
went to Marisa Gonzalez and Juliette Langari. The El Cerrito
students who won prizes donated their winnings back to GRIP for the organization’s

Annual Art of Dairy contest and their art has been sent to the national
contest sponsored by Lucerne. The prize artists are: Alexandra Cardona
(third grade); Gabriela Loretto, (fifth grade) Jazelyn De Guzman and Nena

A number of families of Assumption School in San Leandro participated
in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, Oct. 18, in San
Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The “Assumption Angels,”
many wearing team t-shirts designed by Danielle Perez, lived up to their
name by completing their five-mile walk and raising over $31,000.
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the fourth grade class at St. Joseph
School in Alameda used their first Goodies for Good bake sale to raise
more than $900 for local breast cancer support groups in two 15-minute
recess periods. The class sold packaged and homemade treats. This month,
the third grade class will do a Goodies for Good project for a local animal
shelter.
Eight seniors at Alameda’s St. Joseph Notre Dame High School
(SJND) have been named commended students in the 2009 National Merit
Scholarship Program. They are: William Connacher, Genora Givens, Anna
Patricia Jimenez, Michael McAlister, Teresa Mooney, Madeleine Seiwald,
