The body of Oakland’s first bishop, Floyd L. Begin, will be moved from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward to the mausoleum at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Nov. 2. as part of ceremonies dedicating the new mausoleum. Both Bishop Allen Vigneron and Bishop Emeritus John Cummins will officiate.

A private disinterment will take place at 1 p.m. A police escort will accompany the hearse from Hayward to the cathedral where honorary pall bearers will line the Pilgrim Path as the body is taken to the cathedral plaza where the 2 p.m. service will begin.

Once the procession has entered the cathedral, Evening Prayer will be recited. Following the prayer service, the casket containing Bishop Begin’s body will be carried into the mausoleum underneath the cathedral and placed on the catafalque, where it will remain until 6 p.m. for visitation. The Knights of Columbus Color Corps will serve as honor guards.

After the casket has been placed on the catafalque, the mausoleum will be blessed. This part of the ceremony will be broadcast into the cathedral so those gathered there can participate in the prayers being offered. The dismissal rite will take place in the cathedral. Organizers expect the ceremonies to last until about 4 p.m. A reception will follow in the conference center.

The public is invited to attend the dedication services.
