Faithful Brown Bag volunteers
Eleanor McGorty, 91, of Alameda, Cora Bowen,
82, of Oakland and Clare Pundyk, 84, of Hayward are three of the original
volunteers with the Mercy Brown Bag Program which has been providing
low-income seniors with bags of groceries twice a month for the past
25 years. They continue to volunteer with the program, an outreach
of Mercy Retirement & Care Center in Oakland. |

Lay ministry
The diocesan School for Pastoral Ministry will
be hosting a series of information sessions next month to let parishioners
know about their program that helps prepare men and women for lay ministry.
The school meets on the campus of Holy Names University in Oakland one
Saturday per month for three years, with classes beginning in January.
The information sessions will be held Nov. 1 at St. Anne Church in Union
City (classroom 106) 1 – 2 p.m.; Nov. 7 at Santa Maria Church in
Orinda (conference room) 6 – 6:30 p.m.; Nov. 8, Santa Maria Parish
in Orinda, 12 – 1 p.m.; Nov. 9, St. Peter Martyr Church in Pittsburg
(Centro Juan Diego) 1 – 2 p.m.; and Nov. 15, Holy Names University

St. Columba Parish is hosting a Breast Cancer
Awareness program, Oct. 19 in its community center, 6401 San Pablo
Ave. in Oakland, beginning at noon. The event will be presently jointly
by the health cabinets of the Oakland parish and neighboring Downs Memorial
United Methodist Church. Presenters include Dr. Lisa Bailey, medical director
at the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center, and Pam Ratliss, program director
at Northern California Cancer Center. The event is open to the public.
St. Mark Church in Richmond hosted a citizenship drive in conjunction
with the Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CCISCO),
Sept. 24. Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and Contra Costa County
Supervisor John Gioia attended and encouraged immigrants to be more
involved in their community. The elected leaders also listened to community
concerns about the seizure of people’s property at police checkpoints.
David Marshall Rose, a member of Alameda’s St. Philip
Neri Parish, has been selected to receive the Italian Catholic
Federation’s Pope John XXIII Award, the highest honor bestowed
by the organization on a lay person, for his “humanitarian service
to society.” The parish will honor Rose at the 5 p.m. Mass on Oct.
11. A reception to follow in Msgr. O’Brien Hall.

the Schools
A standing ovation to Mariah Vicedo, Jenny
Nguyen and Jackie Parra, 8th graders at St. Felicitas School
in San Leandro, who raised over $300 for the Make A Wish Foundation
by selling homemade baked goods during recess. Their effort was part of
an in-service learning project.
Our Lady of Grace School in Castro Valley was recently named a
Green Ribbon School by the Castro Valley Sanitary District for its efforts
to improve waste reduction and recycling practices. The award included
a check for $2,000.
Allyson Little, a senior at Oakland’s Holy Names High
School, recently joined the ranks of National Merit semifinalists.
Little was one of 16,000 students out of 1.5 million nationwide who took
the PSAT last fall to earn the distinction.
St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley is one of three Berkeley
schools receiving 40 large, high quality reproductions of great American
art as part of the “Picturing America” program of the National
Endowment for the Humanities. NEH also provides a comprehensive teacher’s
resource book to facilitate the use of works of art in history, social
studies, and literature classes.

Names, News, Notes
Thomas D. Vo, a member of Troop #48 in Pittsburg
and a June graduate of De La Salle High in Concord, recently became
an Eagle Scout after completing his Eagle Scout project — painting
the dining hall and computer rooms of the Ambrose Community Center in
Bay Point. He is attending St. Mary’s College in Moraga and
serving as assistant scout master for his troop.
Congratulations and many Blessings to Matt Tinonga, a longtime
member at Oakland’s Sacred Heart Parish, who recently celebrated
his 100th birthday.
