Obituary:
Sister Mary Alice Ashton, OSF

Sister Mary Alice Ashton, who had just completed four years as a teacher at Oakland’s St. Martin de Porres Regional School, died in Elko, Nevada, on June 12. She was traveling from her ministry in Oakland to begin a new ministry in Baltimore, Maryland, at The Catholic High School of Baltimore. She was 67 years of age.

A native of Baltimore, Sister Ashton joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1965 and professed her first vows in 1968.

She taught at schools and served as a principal for 16 years in the Diocese of Charleston. She also worked at schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Diocese of Wilmington, and the Diocese of Orlando.

From 2001 to 2004, she served as a Title I teacher at St. Augustine School in Oakland. At St. Martin de Porres School, she served as coordinator at the Sacred Heart site as well as a teacher.

Survivors include her sister, Sister Susanne Ashton, RSM; two brothers, William Ashton and Peter Ashton; two stepbrothers, Robert Lundquist and Phillip Lundquist; nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral Mass was held June 19 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Baltimore. Burial was at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Baltimore.
