Sister Mary Geraldine Meyer, OP
Sister Mary Geraldine Meyer, a member of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose for 37 years, died April 20 at age 90 in Fremont.

Born in South Dakota, she grew up in Bellingham, Washington, where she attended elementary and high schools. Soon after graduating from high school, she joined the Dominican Sisters of Tacoma. She taught music and academic subjects and served in leadership positions in several schools in Washington and in Bakersfield, California.

Sister Meyer transferred to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1971 and began teaching in Southern California. She later taught in San Francisco. In 1977 she moved to the Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse where she assisted in the finance department. Three years ago she moved to the community’s care facility and began her apostleship of prayer.

Survivors include her sisters, Sister Mary Jean Meyer, a Dominican Sister of Tacoma, Washington, and Mary Ann; and brothers, Frank and John.

The funeral Mass was held April 30 at the Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse in Fremont. Burial was the next day at the Motherhouse cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Dominican Sisters, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.


Sister Catherine Leo Riegel, OP
Adrian Dominican Sister Catherine Leo Riegel, who taught at St. Lawrence O’Toole School in Oakland (1978-1980) and other schools in California, died April 29 in Adrian, Mich. at the age of 81. She had been a professed religious for 63 years.

A native of Detroit, she held a bachelor’s degree in English and two master’s degrees, one in education and another in religious education, and spent 51 years ministering in Catholic schools as a teacher and librarian. For the last eight years of active ministry, she was a patient relations volunteer at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. She retired to the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. in 2005.

The funeral liturgy was celebrated in Adrian, Mich. on May 2 with burial following in the congregation’s cemetery.
