Sister Irmengard Flori, OP
Sister Irmengard Flori, a Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose for 75 years, died at the Dominican Sisters’ Motherhouse on Feb. 27. She was 96.

Born in Bavaria, she entered religious life in 1932 and spent 65 years in Germany serving at the Dominican Convent in Altenhohenau.

In 1997, she moved to the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont where she shared her special gifts of gardening. She also volunteered as an aide in the Dominican Kindergarten where the students affectionately called her “Sister I” because “Irmengard” was too challenging for them.

The funeral Mass on March 4 at the Mother-house was shared with Dominican Sister Mary Damian Wilson, who died on Feb. 26. Burial was at the Motherhouse cemetery.
 

Sister Madeleine Rita Murphy, SNJM

Sister Madeleine Rita Murphy, an educator and former associate superintendent of schools for the Oakland Diocese, died March 27 in Los Gatos. She was 95 and had been a vowed member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 74 years.

Born in Berkeley, Sister Murphy spent 33 years as an elementary school teacher in northern and southern California and was associate superintendent of schools for the Oakland Diocese from 1967-1978. She spent 17 years working as the archivist for the California Province of the Holy Names Sisters. During that time she wrote a book, “Through the Golden Gate in 1868,” about the six founders of her community.

In 1977 Oakland Bishop Floyd Begin presented Sister Murphy with the papal “Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice” award for her service to the Church.

The funeral Mass was held April 2 at the Holy Names Convent in Los Gatos. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.

Sister Mary Damian Wilson, OP

Sister Mary Damian Wilson, a longtime educator and librarian, died Feb. 26 at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in Fremont. Se was 95.

Born Mary Christina Wilson, she grew up in St. Elizabeth Parish in Oakland. She spent 44 years as a classroom teacher in northern and southern California and Portland, Oregan, followed by 16 years as school librarian.

The funeral Mass on March 4 at the Motherhouse was shared with Dominican Sister Irmengard Flori, who died Feb. 27. Burial was at the Motherhouse cemetery.

Gifts in her memory may be made to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539 or to Vision of Hope at the same address.
