To help parishioners prepare for the opening of the
new Cathedral of Christ the Light in September, two diocesan leaders have
begun a series of parish town hall meetings.
At these meetings, Father Paul Minnihan, cathedral provost, and Dominican
Sister Rose Marie Hennessy, head of the cathedral ministry planning process,
discuss the mission of the cathedral, its relationship to parishes, and
explain opportunities for parishioners to become involved. There will
also be “plenty of opportunity for conversation, questions and answers,”
Father Minnihan said.
His office is also organizing the formation of a 60-voice choir for three
cathedral events — commemoration of the former St. Francis de Sales
Cathedral on Sept. 14, the Sept. 25 dedication of the new cathedral, and
the blessing of the cathedral mausoleum and interment of the body of Oakland’s
first bishop, Floyd Begin, on Nov. 2.
Auditions for the choir are taking place between 7 and 10 p.m. at the
following locations: Corpus Christi Church, Piedmont, April 7; St. Edward
Church, Newark, April 8; and St. Stephen Church, Walnut Creek, April 14.
Auditions at Good Shepherd Church, Pittsburg, on April 12 will be between
10 a.m. and 5 p.m. For audition appointments, call Denise Kogler at 510-271-1935.
