OBITUARY

Sister Ethel Mary Tinnemann, SNJM

Sister Ethel Mary Tinnemann, a former professor at Oakland’s Holy Names University, died March 11 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos. She was 91 and had been a vowed Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 65 years.

A native of Oakland, Sister Tinnemann taught at Oakland’s Holy Names High School and at schools in Pasadena and Alhambra. Then she became a professor of history at Holy Names College (now University), a post she held for 37 years. She became known for her commitment to political activism, voter registration, Oakland history and the preservation of the city’s landmarks.

Survivors include her nephew, Dr. Tom Cory, his wife, Patty; niece Carolyn Bogner, and other relatives.

The funeral Mass was held March 17 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Los Gatos. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. A memorial Mass at Holy Names University will be announced at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Ministry Fund, Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, CA 95031.
