Margaret Thompson, SNJM
Sister Margaret Thompson, formerly known as Sister Clotilda Rose, a longtime
educator and pastoral minister, died Jan. 19 at the Convent of the Holy
Names in Los Gatos. She was 95 years old and a vowed Sister of the Holy
Names of Jesus and Mary for 75 years.
Born and raised in Pasadena, she made her vows as a Holy Names Sister
in 1932. She taught at Sacred Heart School in Oakland, 1940-42 (grade
1); St. Mary School in Oakland, 1943-44 (grade 1); Our Lady of Lourdes
School in Oakland, 1956-59 (grade 6); and at Holy Spirit Elementary School
in Fremont where she served as principal and taught grade 6, 1964-67.
She also taught in several schools in the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
After studying pastoral ministry in Michigan and working in a parish in
the late 1960s, she returned to the Oakland Diocese and served at the
following parishes and hospitals: St. Francis de Sales Parish in Oakland,
1972-73; Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Union City, 1973-79; St. Paul
Parish in San Pablo and Providence Hospital in Oakland, 1979-80; St. David
Parish in Richmond, 1980-81; Mt. Diablo Hospital in Concord, 1981-83;
St. Bede Parish and Kaiser Hospital in Hayward, 1983-84; St. Clement and
Kaiser Hospital, Hayward, 1984-87. In 1987 she moved to the Convent of
the Holy Names in Los Gatos.
The funeral Mass was held Jan. 23 at the Convent of the Holy Names in
Los Gatos. Burial took place the following day at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
in Hayward. Donations in Sister Thompson’s name may be made to the

Brother Timothy James Ford, FSC
Brother Timothy James Ford, a former professor at St. Mary’s College
in Moraga, died Jan. 27 in Napa. A member of the De La Salle Christian
Brothers for 62 years, he was 81.
A native of New York, Brother Ford entered the novitiate in 1946 and professed
his final vows in 1952. Over the years he earned a bachelor’s degree
and three master’s degrees. He served as a professor at Bethlehem
University from 1978-82 where he championed the rights of the Palestinians.
This earned him the ire of the Israeli government, which ordered him to
leave the country within 24 hours.
In 1983 Brother Ford became a professor in the Extended Education Program
at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, where he worked for four years.
He went to Cuernavaca, Mexico, to study Spanish so that he could teach
in the free school operated by the Brothers of the San Francisco District
and the District of Mexico-North in Tijuana, Mexico. He taught various
courses there until he retired in 2001 at De La Salle House in Berkeley.
He moved to Napa in 2004.
Survivors included three nieces and one grandnephew.
The funeral Mass was held on Feb. 2 in the Mont La Salle Chapel at Mont
La Salle in Napa. Burial was at the community’s cemetery. Memorial
