Brother Bernard Foster, S.M.
Brother Bernard Foster, a longtime educator and member of the Society of Mary, died Dec. 14 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto at the age of 88.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he joined the Society of Mary and professed first vows in 1939 and perpetual vows in 1942. He spent over 40 years teaching in elementary and high schools including St. Joseph School in Alameda. A former teacher and vice principal at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco, he also taught at schools in Japan and Hawaii. He participated in the construction of the Marianist Formation Center, now the newly renovated Marianist Center in Cupertino, in 1978.

Brother Foster, who retired in Hawaii in 1981, moved to the Villa St. Joseph in Cupertino three years ago. Earlier this year he moved to the Marianist Center, a health care and resident home for Marianists in Cupertino. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Marianist Center, 22683 Alcalde Road, Cupertino, CA 95014-3903.

Sister M. Brigid Cullen, SHF
Sister M. Brigid Cullen, who served in several parishes in the Oakland Diocese, died Dec. 18 in Fremont. She was 84 and a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family for 65 years.

Sister Cullen served at St. Vincent’s Day Home in Oakland (1945-1950) and the following parishes: St. Philip Neri in Alameda (1945-1950), St. Barnabas in Alameda (1945-1950), St. Paul in San Pablo (1949-1950), St. Mark in Richmond (1949-1950), Our Lady of Mercy in Point Richmond (1949-1950), Our Lady of the Rosary in Union City (1951), Corpus Christi in Piedmont (1972-1974), St. Jarlath in Oakland (1972-1974), Our Lady of Grace in Castro Valley (1972-1974), and St. Leonard in Fremont (1986-1991).

The funeral was held at the Motherhouse Chapel of the Sisters of the Holy Family in Fremont on Dec. 21 and burial took place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. Memorial contributions may be made to the works of the Sisters of the Holy Family, P.O. Box 3248, Fremont, CA 94539.

Sister Dorothy D’Haene, O.P.
Sister Dorothy D’Haene, formerly known as Sister Henry Francis D’Haene, died Dec. 27 in Adrian, Mich. She was 83 years of age and in the 58th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

The Detroit native spent 42 years ministering in education. She taught at St. Louis Bertrand School in Oakland from 1950-1956 and at schools in Palm Springs and Riverside, CA; as well as Florida, Georgia, Michigan and the Bahamas. She was principal at St. Mary School in Rome, Georgia. She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. in 1995.

The funeral Mass was held Dec. 31 in St. Catherine Chapel at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. Burial was in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Dr., Adrian, MI, 49221.
