Cathedral work progressing

Construction continues at the corner of Harrison Street and Grand Avenue in Oakland for the Cathedral of Christ the Light and its adjacent buildings. When the Cathedral Center is completed next year, there will be a pedestrian thoroughfare through the cathedral plaza at 22nd Street to Harrison Street, connecting downtown Oakland to Lake Merritt.

In the first of four photos below, early morning sun at the east side of the cathedral’s glass curtain wall reflects through the interior and projects the inner wooden structure onto the glass wall at the west side.

Dedication is set for Sept. 25, 2008.

Above, a workman positions one of the ladder segments that will be the only accesss to the skylight roof once the scaffolding is removed.

The 1028 glass panels that make up the veil curtain wall (left) of the cathedral have a ceramic frit material baked into them, creating luminous and continually changing images as the surfaces are struck by sunlight.

Below, a steel worker adjusts the metal framework of the Omega window. Exterior glass panels will be installed by mid-December, and the window’s interior metal panels, which will carry the image of Christ in Glory, will be installed in January.
